Branford Marsalis Quartet
Last night I experienced America’s (arguably) only truly original artform in the middle of Europe. Thanks to a tip from my new Hamburg friend Meggan, I heard New Orleans jazz saxophonist, former Tonight Show bandleader, son of Ellis, and brother of Wynton, Branford Marsalis was coming to Geneva. The concert was in the gorgeous Victoria Hall, only a short walk from my apartment. I got together a group of 9 people, primarily from YAGs and we were able to get 2nd balcony seats for a mere 25CHF each which is a pretty great deal for Geneva.
I’m pretty happy with my little camera. This was taken from the same vantage point as the previous, without flash, and still came out pretty well.
Post-concert, the hall with lights on (to show a little more of the detailing).
The music was amazing. HOT is the term that I would use to describe a great deal of it, especially the drumming. There’s something so mystical about how music, especially jazz, can create such a vast picture or so readily impart emotion. A simple quartet of piano, bass, percussion, and saxophone transported me to other worlds and I feel blessed to have had this opportunity to experience such talent and vitality. Makes me want to pick up the ol’ trumpet again…
